Penglipuran Village & Tree Planting

Half day · Penglipuran Traditional Village, Bangli, Bali · Easy, flat village lanes and garden work

Walk one of Bali's most carefully kept traditional villages with residents, then plant trees together at the Sekar Anugrah garden and take a seedling home.

Short answer

Penglipuran is in Bangli regency, in Bali's cooler upland interior to the east of Ubud, and most visitors get there by car with a driver. There is no simple public transport option for most travellers. Exact travel time depends on where you are staying and the traffic on the day, so we confirm timing and transport arrangements when you share your dates and pick-up area.

Where is Penglipuran in relation to Ubud?

Ubud sits in the middle of the island in Gianyar regency. Penglipuran is in neighbouring Bangli, higher up and further inland. The air is noticeably cooler there, which is one reason mornings are pleasant for walking.

We do not quote a drive time in this guide, because it changes with the exact start point and the traffic. When you book, we confirm it for your accommodation.

What is the easiest way to travel there?

For most travellers, a car with a driver. It lets you arrive in the morning, which matters more at Penglipuran than at many places, and it means nobody in your group is navigating unfamiliar village roads.

Scooters are common in Bali, but for a half day that includes garden work and a meal, and for groups, a car is simpler. If you are travelling as a company or school group, tell us your numbers so transport can be planned to match.

Why does arriving early make such a difference?

Penglipuran is well known, and it gets busier as the day goes on. In the morning the lane is quieter and the air cooler, and residents are going about their routines rather than handling a steady stream of visitors.

An early start also changes the kind of visit you have. It is easier to listen to your host, to look properly at a compound gateway, and to ask questions without stepping aside every few seconds. If you can only manage one adjustment to your plans, make it the start time.

What happens once you arrive?

On our Penglipuran Village & Tree Planting programme, you meet a local host at the village entrance for an orientation to the layout and customs. The walk follows the main lane and compounds, with commentary on traditional architecture and community-led spatial planning.

After the walk, the group moves to the Sekar Anugrah garden in Penglipuran for tree planting: growing media, planting and care technique, and how seedlings are followed up after you leave. Everyone pots a seedling to take home. The half day closes with a traditional Balinese lunch.

Can you combine Penglipuran with other stops from Ubud?

Yes, though we suggest being realistic. Penglipuran works best unhurried, and a half day here already includes a walk, planting and lunch. Many people pair a visit to the Bangli area with time in the uplands, but squeezing several sights into one day tends to push the village into the busy part of the afternoon.

If you are planning around seasons and weather, our Bali seasonality guide helps you see which months are wetter, which affects road time and what to pack.

What should you prepare before leaving Ubud?

Pack for a living village with active temples, not a beach day:

  • Modest clothing, with shoulders and knees covered
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A light rain layer in the wet season

Village entry and the community contribution are included in our programme, so you do not need cash for the gate. A little cash is useful if you want to buy something from residents along the lane.

Is this right for you?

Good for

  • Travellers based in Ubud who want a calm half day in the uplands
  • Groups who prefer transport and timing arranged for them
  • Early risers

Not for

  • Anyone hoping to reach Penglipuran on foot or by public bus easily
  • People trying to fit many sights into a single day

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Ubud to Penglipuran?

It depends on where in Ubud you are staying and the traffic on the day, so we do not publish a single figure. When you share your dates and pick-up area, we confirm the timing and plan the start so you arrive in the cooler, quieter part of the morning.

Is transport from Ubud included in your tour?

Transport arrangements are confirmed when you book, based on your group size and where you are staying. Tell us in your enquiry if you need pick-up. The programme price itself covers the village host, entry and contribution, planting materials, a seedling and lunch.

Can I visit Penglipuran from Ubud by public transport?

For most visitors it is not practical. Public transport in Bali's interior is limited and hard to time, and you would struggle to arrive early. A car with a driver is the usual way to get there, and it makes the morning start realistic.

What time should I leave Ubud?

Early enough to arrive in the morning, when the village is cooler and quieter. The exact time depends on your accommodation, so we set it when we confirm your booking. We also avoid major ceremony days unless you specifically ask to visit on one.
