Group size

2 people per canoe, scalable to large groups

Activity level

Active, paddling and walking in soft mud

Location

Batu Lumbang mangrove ecotourism area, Denpasar, Bali

About this experience

A day designed to be understood, not just visited.

The program runs with the Batu Lumbang mangrove ecotourism group. Participants paddle the mangrove channels by canoe, two people per canoe, accompanied by local guides who know the tides and the channels.

Depending on what your group chooses, the paddle can become a planting session, where seedlings are set into the mud with bamboo stakes and ties, or a clean-up, where teams collect the plastic and debris the tide pushes into the roots.

A mangrove education session with a local speaker can be added, covering why these forests matter for the coastline, fisheries, and carbon.

What to expect

The day, step by step

  1. Welcome & mangrove briefing

Meet the local guides, life jackets fitted, safety and paddling basics, and an introduction to the mangrove system.

  2. Canoe the mangrove channels

Paddle out in pairs with guides leading the group. Every ten canoes are accompanied by two guides, for a maximum of two hours on the water.

  3. Planting or clean-up

Either plant mangrove seedlings with bamboo stakes and ties in the tidal mud, or work as teams with hooks and sacks to pull waste out of the roots.

  4. Education session & closing

Optional session with a local mangrove speaker, then wrap-up, rinse-off, and departure.

Sustainability impact

The forest that holds the coastline together

Mangroves buffer storm surge, hold sediment, and shelter the juvenile fish that local fisheries depend on. Planting and clean-up here are maintenance work on real infrastructure, not a photo opportunity.

Canoes, guides, seedlings, and equipment all come from the Batu Lumbang ecotourism group, so the fees stay with the community that manages the forest year-round.

Waste pulled from the channels is sorted afterwards, and the education component is developed with the Bali Waste Management Training Centre (BWMTC).

Any program can be combined with a CSR or community-support component, matched to what the host village actually needs at the time of your visit.
