Short answer
Yes, Penglipuran works well for children. The main lane is flat and kept free of traffic, the activity level is easy, and the tree planting at the Sekar Anugrah garden gives children something to do with their hands rather than only listening. Each child can pot a seedling to take home. Go in the morning, when it is cooler, and keep the walk unhurried.
| Activity level | Easy, flat village lanes and garden work |
|---|---|
| Hands-on part | Tree planting & potting a seedling to take home |
| Duration | Half day |
| Dress code | Shoulders and knees covered, for children too |
| Lunch | Traditional Balinese lunch & drinking water included |
| Best time | Morning, cooler and quieter |
What makes Penglipuran easier with children than other places?
Three practical things. The main lane is a single stone-paved street on a gentle slope, kept free of traffic, so you are not steering children around scooters. The pace is walking, not hiking. And the day has a clear shape, with a walk, then planting, then lunch, so nobody is asked to concentrate for too long.
On our Penglipuran Village & Tree Planting programme, the activity level is easy throughout: flat village lanes and light garden work.
Will children actually enjoy it?
Most do, mainly because of the planting. After the village walk, the group moves to the Sekar Anugrah garden to learn about growing media and planting technique and to plant together. Then everyone pots a seedling to take home, with care instructions.
Children tend to respond to having a job and a result. Carrying their own plant away gives the morning a point they can understand, and the care instructions give them something to follow up on once you are back home or at your accommodation.

See the tourHow do you keep the village walk interesting for them?
Give them something to look for. The compounds along the lane have near-identical gateways, and children are often good at spotting what is the same and what is different. Ask them why every house might follow the same pattern, then let your host answer.
It also helps to explain beforehand that people live in every house they pass. That simple point, which we cover in what 'preserved village' actually means in Bali, changes how children behave: quieter voices, no climbing on walls, no running into courtyards.
What should children wear and bring?
The same rules apply to children as to adults. Penglipuran has active temples and is a living village, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Beyond that:
- Comfortable walking shoes that can get a little dirty in the garden
- A refillable water bottle each
- A light rain layer in the wet season
- A hat if your children are sensitive to sun
Drinking water is included with lunch, but having their own bottle during the walk saves interruptions.
Is there anything to watch out for?
The main thing is timing. Later in the day the lane gets busier, and a crowded street is harder work with small children. Mornings are cooler and calmer, which is why we plan around them.
The other is ceremonies. We avoid major ceremony days unless you ask to time a visit around one. If you do, a ceremony can be memorable for children, but it also means more people and more rules about where you can stand. Tell us your dates and we will be clear about what to expect.
Is this right for you?
Good for
- Families with children who like hands-on activities
- Mixed-age family groups, since the walking is flat and easy
- School groups looking for a half day with a practical element
Not for
- Families hoping for a playground or water-based activity
- Children who struggle with quiet behaviour in residential spaces
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum age for the Penglipuran tour?
Tell us the ages of your children when you enquire and we will advise for your group. The activity level is easy, with flat lanes and light garden work, and families often bring young children. We plan the pace of the half day around the youngest in the group.
Can young children do the tree planting?
Yes, with help from an adult. The planting session at the Sekar Anugrah garden is guided, and the hosts explain growing media and technique simply. Potting a seedling to take home is usually the part children enjoy most, and they can do much of it themselves.
Is the food suitable for children?
Lunch is a traditional Balinese meal. Some Balinese dishes can be spicy, so mention children and any dietary needs when you book and we will pass this on to the host. Drinking water is included.
Is Penglipuran stroller friendly?
The main lane is stone-paved and on a gentle slope, without traffic. The garden section involves soil and planting, so a stroller is less useful there. Tell us if you are bringing one and we will advise on the parts of the half day where carrying is easier.
What will my child bring home?
A seedling they potted themselves, with care instructions. It is a small thing, but it gives children something concrete from the day and a reason to remember where it came from.
